A lifestyle expat travel blog about culture, history, Brexit, the Royal Family, travels around the world, Europe, and being British in Berlin!
So last week I wrote about my experience back in the office. It was only for a day, so not to worry!
However, if you’re a British expat who lives in Europe, and you need to renew your passport, you’ve got to read this!
So back to Berlin!
I’ve already shown you Spreewald and Lübbenau and Lake Schwielowsee and Caputh!
Let me introduce you to Blossom City – Blütenstadt Werder (Havel)!
Blossom City!
Blütenstadt!
Werder!
Havel!
So what’s that about it, when it’s at home?
No need to worry.
I’ll tell you!
Blossom City, otherwise known as Blütenstadt Werder (Havel) is a water town in Brandenburg located on the River Havel!
Not only is the whole city an island, but it’s a protected monument, has been around since 1317 and is most famous for the island city itself, it’s historic Old Town, it’s natural water properties, it’s fruit, it’s orchards, it’s traditional crafts, tasty wine and wine production, cycling, the lake, boating and sailing, and it’s blossoms!
In fact, it’s fruit blossoms are so famous that it even has it’s own festival – the Baumblütenfest or the Tree Blossom Festival – which is the third largest festival in Germany!
It usually takes place April /May but I forgot to write about it so that YOU could see it if you’re here.
Oops!
As you know, I love water towns so I’ve been to the Werdel (Havel) many times, but I’ve never been to the Blossom City – Blütenstadt Werder (Havel)!
We spent the day there so had plenty of time to wander through the shipyard, stroll around, and relax on the waterside admiring the many beautiful yachts and sailing boats.
As you can imagine, parts of the island is prime estate and nobody wants every Tom, Dick & Harry wading through their back garden, so there are public paths, cobbled roads and stretches of grassland that you can go through and even picnic on, if you so desire.
And of course, the Old Town is available to all, so we had our boiled egg and sandwiches on one of the many piers all over the island!
We also went on one of the many orchard trails, then we went to the Bockwindmühle or the Post Mill, which you can go into, climb to the top and see the view.
After that we went to the Rathaus /Town Hall which was closed, and the Heilig-Geist-Kirche / Holy Spirit Church, which wasn’t!
Then through the Old Town we went.
We were so exhausted that we absolutely had to have a break!
So we wandered into the lovely Fischrestaurant Arielle where you can buy all sorts of fresh and smoked fish.
We took a lakeside seat outdoors, and had a couple of beers.
Obviously!
Suitably refreshed, we continued our walk and then strolled briskly to the station so that we could take our train back to Berlin.
We absolutely loved our time at the Blossom City – Blütenstadt Werder (Havel).
I’m sure you will too!
Obviously, Berlin is the best and you really don’t need to go anywhere at all, if you’re here.
But.
If you’ve got a few extra days.
Or
You’ve seen it all.
But you know, I hardly think so …
Then this is for you!
We live in North Berlin, so to Blossom City – Blütenstadt Werder (Havel) is just a hop and a breeze away!
Having said that, if you’re a visitor to Berlin, you don’t need to leave, as it’s the greenest city in Germany!
But if you must, it’s only about 1 hour from Berlin.
Why not?
