I wrote something on the British-German Facebook Forum page, and it created so much buzz that I decided to turn it into a blog piece too.
Here we go!
I chose to keep a physical British passport as outside of my day job as a Training Manager of an IT company, I also travel a lot as – The British Berliner – and I like to be able to choose which passports are more convenient.
And also because, why not?
As most of you know, you can no longer renew or apply for a British passport in Germany, so you have to apply to the HM Passport Office.
The HM Passport Office is the sole issuer of UK passports and responsible for civil registration services through the General Register Office.
It’s part of the Home Office.
But the passport office for Brits who live overseas is in Durham!
I live in Berlin so I used the online feature.
This online feature is the service you use to apply for, renew, replace or update your British passport!
If you give them your Email address or mobile phone, they will inform you on where your application stands, every step of the way!
I applied for the renewal of our British passports – 18.03.22.
Documents Received – 08.04.22
Passport Application Approved – 12.04.22
New Passport Printed – 08.04.22
New Passport arrived at my home – 21.04.22.
Time taken: 1 month!
Bear in mind, there was a postal staff strike in Berlin, so there would have been a backlog.
As a result, I had to go to an independent Deutsche Post franchise office in order to get things moving, so perhaps things might have been even quicker!
British Passport Renewal: £105.86 or €126.51
Cost of secure DHL Paket International: €29.99
Package Box for putting passport in – bought at Deutsche Post – €1.39
Passport Photographs from approved photography studio – €19.99
Total Cost: €177.88!
Obviously, you can definitely go a little cheaper with the cost of post and package or the photographs. But why take the risk of the passport getting lost, or the application being rejected ‘cos you made a minor mistake?
Yes, it’s far more expensive than my German passport would have cost, but I’m still very pleased!
I’ve already answered 300 – 500 questions on Facebook, so either join me there, or ask your questions below!
