A lifestyle expat travel blog about culture, history, Brexit, the Royal Family, travels around the world, Europe, and being British in Berlin!
Hey there!
How are you doing?
These are difficult times, but I thought I would put a little sunshine into your life by telling you about some of the places I’ve been to in the last two years!
‘Cos even though I didn’t actually write about it, I did travel quite a bit!
In fact, we swathed ourselves in lots of fresh countryside air, and because we live in North Berlin, much of the surrounding countryside is a mere 30 minutes away, or less!
One of the places we went to was an unspoilt gem called Spreewald!
Spreewald / Spree Forest is in Brandenburg.
It has been around since the Ice Age and is a large stretch of land which is unique in Europe!
It’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve which includes the River Spree that is split into a labyrinth of over 1000kms / 621,371 miles of waterways, 300 canals, rivers and streams, wetlands, a floodplain, a bog landscape, a primeval forest, traditional little villages, and tiny farms that connect to each other by canoe!
We’ve been there loads of times and it’s such a practical place to get to.
Having said that, if you’re a visitor to Berlin, you don’t need to leave, as it’s the greenest city in Germany!
But if you must, it’s only about an hour from Berlin, and is home to fire-bellied toads, frogs, storks, and otters!
In fact, we were quite shocked to see one otter run right past our feet!
Did you know that Spreewald / Spree Forest not only has the Lehde Open-Air Musuem / Freilandmuseum Lehde, and the Museum of Agrarian History / Bauernmuseum mit Agrartechnik, it also has Germany’s only gherkin museum, and is notable for it’s very famous, and very tasty cucumbers?
Wow!
So what are you waiting for?
It’s not that easy to get information in English, but if you’re willing to translate stuff for yourself, then it’s golden.
Here we go!
For the official Spreewald Tourism Association Website. Click here!
Information on the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve
Information on the Biosphärenreservat Spreewald (in German)
This is a website on practically everything Spreewald.
It has lots of really good information, but you’ll have to translate it yourself, as it’s in German. Click here!
You can rent a canoe or book a traditional boat tour and let the local ferrymen punt you through charming villages, quiet forests and peaceful waters.
Depending on location, you can book a variety of boat rides at group or individual prices! Click here!
Germany is obsessed with cucumbers and not only are Spreewald Gherkins a special breed of pickled cucumber from Brandenburg, they are (like champagne) protected by the European Union.
Spreewald gherkins are the best!
